Police officials in Zamboanga City arrested three men who are allegedly members of the Abu Sayyaf during a pre-dawn raid on Friday, September 9.
According to Billy Beltran, Director Chief Superintendent of Police Regional Office 9, the men were suspected to be on the works of staging a bomb attack in the Zamboanga Peninsula.
“The three ASG members were allegedly tasked to conduct bombing operation in Zamboanga City as monitored by the intelligence community since September 4, 2016,” Beltran said.
They were identified as Jamar Musa (44), Ahmad Tandih (33), and Omar Kumbing (36). All three were claimed to be natives of the town of Parang in Sulu.
Moreover, they were believed to be under the Ajang Ajang group and have successfully slipped past from their hometown after the large increase of military troops in the place.
Authorities from station 7 were accompanied by their intelligence division unit as narrated by Zamboanga City Police Office’s Chief Inspector Helen Galvez. The men have been staying at a rented house located in the City Water District.
She also added that the suspects have been carrying firearms. Officials were able to recover one caliber .38 pistol with 6 pieces of live ammunition, an Mk.2 fragmentation grenade with canister, a camouflage uniform, and two mobile phones.
Beltran was glad that their intensified campaign against terrorism through the Law Enforcement Operation was paying off, hence the positive result of their break-in.
Officials from the Coast Guard station in Zamboanga City have also become more alert following the incident – coming up with a more intensive screening of passengers who arrive from Sulu and Basilan.
Coast Guard station commander lieutenant Jimmy Berbo quipped that they have tightened operations on inspecting cargos, especially from those who came from areas where military offenses have been occurring, with the help of their K-9 unit.
After the explosion at a popular night market in Davao City, citizens have been worried on various bomb threats circulating on social media. Recently, schools located near the Malacañang Palace have received warnings regarding a terror attack.
