- President Duterte insulted Barack Obama, calling him “son of a whore,” just before leaving for the ASEAN Summit
- Donald Trump described the act as “Terrible!”
- Hillary Clinton likewise condemned the act and said that more than the relationship between nations, respect should be present
US presidential candidates Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton adversely reacted to President Duterte’s insult against President Barack Obama.
Trump took to social media where he expressed dismay over the insulting words hurled by Duterte against Obama.
Clinton on the other hand gave a statement supporting the decision of Obama canceling the scheduled meeting with Duterte after the news of his insult reached Clinton, and even after Duterte has already expressed regret about his statements.
Donald Trump, the official Republican candidate, stated that the treatment Obama has received for the past days was “Terrible.” Trump wasn’t only referring to the insult that Duterte made against Obama but also the fact that the latter wasn’t provided with a Chinese staircase as his plane touched down at the Beijing airport.
The act of the Chinese was treated as a snub of the American president by the Chinese leaders during the G20 summit.
Hillary Clinton, the official Democratic presidential candidate said that while it was important for the two countries to have a relationship, there should be respect.
“We have a lot of ties between the United States and the Philippines. And I think it’s very important that we have a relationship,” Clinton said. “But there has to be a certain level of respect that is expected on both sides.”
The two US presidential candidates often don’t see eye to eye but the insult of Duterte against Obama resulted in both candidates finding a common ground.
