Following the cancellation of the pre-arranged meeting between Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte and US President Barack Obama in Laos on Tuesday, September 6, the Philippine government and Duterte have released statements to clarify the 'strong' remarks and the canceled meeting.

According to the statement from the Philippine government released by Presidential Communications Office (PCO) Secretary Martin Andanar, Duterte had explained that his 'strong' comments against Obama were his response to the press reports which said that he would be receiving "lectures" from the US President regarding the issues on extrajudicial killings.

Duterte has also expressed regret that his colorful remarks had elicited concerns and went on to stress that "it is imperative for the fight against illegal drugs, terrorist, crimes, and poverty must be won in order to preserve the principle and values" by which our democratic lives are based.

The press briefing ended with Press Secretary Jesus Dureza who announced that as of the moment, no exact date has been set for the meeting of the two leaders.
