One netizen said that one of his worst nightmares has come true: that the Philippines and the U.S. are not in good terms with each other. Many observers believe that the Philippines greatly benefit from having a good relationship with the U.S., especially regarding the territorial disputes with China.

Other netizens think that the reason why Duterte is ambivalent towards Obama is because of the former’s alleged lack of trust in a democratic government.

Several netizens also tried to calm the storm by urging others not to add fuel to the fire between the two country leaders.

Some online users thought that the supposed rivalry between Obama and Duterte is funny while others are hoping that the Philippine President is just joking about his comments.

Other online users are also blaming the media for making it appear as if the President was cursing Obama. According to one netizen, Duterte was actually expressing his anger towards the media for emphasizing the alleged extrajudicial killings in the country.

Several netizens also pointed out that Obama should first handle the human rights violations in the U.S. before worrying about the violations in the Philippines.

New reports say that Obama had already canceled a meeting with Duterte due to the insults from the latter. The U.S. President was expected to raise the issue on human rights violations of alleged drug criminals in the country and the spate of drug killings since Duterte assumed office.
