Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio – daughter of President Rodrigo Duterte – has released a statement following the Friday night market explosion in Davao City which killed at least 14 people and wounded at least 71.
The mayor expressed her condolences to the families left behind by the blast victims and promised that the local government would assist them with their needs.
“I would like to express my deepest condolences to the families of those who died last night. I would also like to reassure all of them, as well as the families of those who are injured that the City Government of Davao will assist in all their needs for hospitalization, burial, funeral and day to day expenses,” Duterte-Carpio wrote.
The mayor also apologized to the victims and their families for the explosion and reminded the city officials to fulfill their duties for the Davao City residents.
“I would like to remind other officials to stay within the bounds of their official duties according to their position. Please leave me in peace to do my job and I'll leave you to focus on your own work,” the mayor stated.
She also gave inspirational words to Dabawenyos and urged them to unite in this time of mourning.
“We will not be terrorized by this heinous crime and I call on all Dabawenyos to unite and let us help each other rise from this senseless incident,” Duterte-Carpio added.
Sara Duterte also advised the citizens to stay safe, be vigilant, and report any kind of suspicious activity to the authorities. She also informed the people about a 4 p.m. memorial at the explosion site where flowers, candles, and prayers will be offered for the victims of the blast.
Due to her delicate pregnancy, Duterte-Carpio has avoided public appearances in recent months but has continued to fulfill her responsibilities as the city mayor.
