- The commercials aim to discourage drug use and that there is still hope to change
The Presidential Communications Operations Office (PCOO) released two new TV commercials that aim to discourage people from using drugs.
The new public service commercials will air in TV networks, especially in government media arm PTV4 and RTVM. The new commercials are entitled, “Father” and “Mother”.
In “Father,” it showed that the father is a drug user and the things he missed in his daughter’s life like birthdays, graduation, and wedding. In his deathbed, he felt regret for missing out on those things. The commercial transcend the message not to use drugs and spend more time with your family.
In “Mother,” the mother is an OFW and works hard to send money to her son back in the Philippines. Her son, however, is a drug user and uses her mother’s hard-earned money for his vice. The son got into a conflict and killed another person. He called his mother asking for help as he was hiding. This has a message that sons who were drug users are ungrateful of their parents and will get nothing but trouble out of drug use.
Both commercials aim to deliver the message that there is nothing but regret when using drugs. However, these commercials try to send the message that there is still time to change.
Netizens reacted positively on the commercials, saying:
“This is the reality for Filipinos who works in abroad and very sad it's happened every day, drugs kills the family. Let us support the new government fight against drugs and criminality.”
“Ang galing ng message nito, wag natin ipagpalit ang sandaling ginhawa na dulot ng droga sa ating mga mahal sa buhay. (This has a message. Let us not trade our loved ones over the fleeting happiness brought by drugs.)”
Others noticed that drug users are both males, which represent the fact that most drug users are males. The commercials were directed by highly-acclaimed director Brillante Mendoza who also directed President Rodrigo Duterte’s State of the Nation Address. His works include Serbis, Kinatay, and Ma Rosa.
