MANILA, Philippines - In the upcoming 28th and 29th ASEAN Summit in Laos, President Rodrigo Duterte said that meeting with Russian leader President Vladimir Putin is what he looks forward the most.
On the sidelines of an event with overseas Filipino workers on Wednesday, August 31 at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport Terminal 2, Duterte said that he looked forward to meeting Putin. "Mas gusto ko si Putin (I like Putin more)"

When he was asked why he was excited to meet Putin, the president's response was: "Pareho kami eh ( we're similar)."
Initially, he was a bit coy about explaining why he thought Putin and he were similar but as he pulled away from reporters, Duterte said while grinning, "Baka sa girls ( Maybe when it comes to the ladies)."
Foreign media organizations have already made comparisons between Putin and Duterte as two leaders who both use an iron hand strongman style of leadership, who have both constantly expressed anti-American sentiments.
International newsgroup CNN, have even likened Duterte, Putin and US presidential candidate Donald trump together as they all embody a "blunt, fiercely macho leadership."
This will be the first time that Duterte will be meeting other heads of states and leaders at the 28th and 29th ASEAN Summit and other related Summits in Vientiane, Laos, from September 6-8.
President Duterte is also set to have bilateral meetings with US President Barack Obama, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, and Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull.
The ASEAN Summit is a semi-annual meeting held by the member of theAssociation of Southeast Asian Nations in relation to the economic and cultural development of Southeast Asian countries.
