Australia: Don't trivialize rape

The Australian Ambassador has joined the chorus of public figures condemning Duterte's rape joke.

Amanda Gorley, the Australian Ambassador to the Philippines, said in a tweet that any attempt to trivialize rape and murder is wrong.

Last April 12, Duterte joked about an Australian missionary who was murdered and gang raped. But it was not the morbid subject of the talk that earned public condemnation, but rather how he treated it.

He said that the woman was so beautiful that he wished he got her first.

The Davao Mayor refused to issue an apology, citing his gutter language as reason for his remark.

The youtube video, which showed Duterte making the joke, drew a lot of criticisms from the public. Even his running mate, Senator Alan Peter Cayetano felt sorry for what his presidential nominee said.
