The first batch of Makati teachers receive allowances unpaid up from 18 years ago until today. According to Makati mayor Romulo "Kid" Peña, the teachers and also non-teaching personnel would finally receive the much awaited allowances they have been entitled to since 1998. Peña said: "I am truly glad that the first batch of teachers and non-teaching staff can now receive their back allowances from 1998 to 2014... I also thank the Makati City School Board for supporting this initiative and issuing Resolution No. 1, Series of 2016 that approves the supplemental budget of P117,000,000 for the back allowances".
According to Peña the 88 personnel to receive their allowances were from Bangkal Elementary School, Makati Pre-School Division and Nicanor Garcia Elementary School. The highest amount to be received was P100,000 while the lowest was P6,000. He also said that during the Binay's rule in Makati, the said allowances were not approved. The P117M was part of a supplementary budget of P499.4M allotted for the purchase of school supplies and for the renovation of school buildings.
Only the schools who have complied with the documentary requirements early have been given the allowances.
Peña said that teachers from the schools have thanked him for "hearing their voice and advocating for the passage of the resolution".
"They have been clamoring for the grant of their allowances from the time of the previous administration,” Peña added.
Mayor Peña is running against Rep. Abby Binay for Mayor. Peña took over when Junjun Binay stepped down following the court order.
