- A third hearing was postponed after the Department of Transportation showed up with no concrete projects to fix the Manila traffic problem
- Senator Grace Poe criticized the Department of Transportation and the House of Representatives for slowing down the process of solving the increasing traffic situation in Manila
- The current proposal is to give President Duterte emergency powers, though undefined, to solve the crisis
Senator Grace Poe has criticized the Department of Transportation (DOTr) for their failure to provide yet again a concrete proposal to solve the traffic crisis in Manila.
The Senate has already started initiating a proposal to grant emergency powers to President Rodrigo Duterte to fix the issue of traffic.
On the other hand, the House of Representatives have not yet acted to solve the crisis. The House of Representatives have been focused on the proposed 2017 national budget.
Chairperson of the Senate committee on public services Senator Grace Poe heavily criticized the House, stating that only the Senate are concerned about resolving the traffic problem.
“Gusto kong sabihin sa ating mga kababayan, ang Senado pa lang talaga ngayon ang nagtatrabaho ukol dito sa emergency hearing sapagka't hinihintay pa rin natin ang Kongreso na kumilos, isa 'yun at alam naman nating hindi papasa ang emergency powers na 'yan kahit na pumasa na sa Senado kung wala pa rin ang aming counterpart sa Kongreso,” Poe said.
(I want to tell the Filipino citizens, only the Senate has been working on the emergency powers hearing because the House of Representatives have yet to act, which could jeopardize the proposal given that the emergency powers would only be granted with the approval of our counterpart.)
The Senator further criticized the DOT, saying that the agency has not given any concrete plans to solve the crisis, given that a third hearing on the issue was postponed since the DOTr had no traffic plan to present to the committee.
The proposed emergency power bill would give the President emergency powers for 2-3 years.
Grace Poe further encouraged the DOTr to provide a detailed proposal.
During the August 25 hearing, DOTr officials asked the Senate committee to provide the agency with two more weeks of preparation for their proposal of concrete projects to fix the traffic crisis in Manila. - Kami Media
