Rookie Jeth Troy Rosario exploded for 31 big points to help the Talk 'N Text Tropang Texters overcome the gritty Alaska Aces, 106-99, in their heir best-of-three quarterfinals duel in the 2016 PBA Commissioner’s Cup Sunday at Cuneta Astrodome.
The second overall draft pick in the 2015 PBA draft proved his mettle in the pros by leading his team with his hot shooting hands. His 31 markers were highlighted by seven triples and seven rebounds. Before the playoff round, Rosario was only averaging 9.4 points and 3.7 rebounds. He stepped up big time in TNT’s early campaign, especially when forward and regular starter Ranidel de Ocampo was sidelined with an injury.
After a 27-all count at the end of first quarter, Talk ‘N Text piled up some points in the second quarter to tally a 57-44 cushion at halftime. Tropang Texters then closed the third quarter with an 81-72 lead.
As expected, Alaska mounted a huge comeback via an 8-0 run in the early minutes of the payoff period. They were able to tie the count at 85-all, but Rosario and Jason Castro made timely hits from long distance to keep Alaska at bay and seal the victory.
Rosario was supported by import David Simon with 24 points, while Castro and de Ocampo tallied 17 and 13 markers, respectively.
For Alaska, returning import Rob Dozier poured 22 points, and Calvin Abueva had 18 points.
TNT can close out the best-of-three series on Tuesday at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
