Is the Philippines ready for a new kind of music as Jpop idol sensation AKB48 will have a Manila-based sister group – MNL48.
In its official Facebook Page, the group teased fans that the group is coming soon with a photo of its billboard. The caption reads,
“Has anyone spotted the very first MNL48 billboard? If you happen to find it please take a photo and share it with us using the hashtag #MNL48Start. HINT: It’s in Quezon City.”
The group’s probable theatre is located in Timog-Rotonda in Tomas Morato, Quezon City. It is still unknown how many members will comprise MNL48. However, some netizens claimed that auditions are currently ongoing for the idol group.
MNL48 is a sister group of Japan’s popular AKB48, which has taken the Jpop scene by storm. AKB48 was conceptualized by producer Yasushi Akimoto who wanted to form a girl group that performs daily. Like a true businessman, Akimoto has expanded the group’s concept in China and Indonesia, with upcoming groups announced for the Philippines, Taiwan and Thailand.
Netizens, on the other hand, is very welcoming with the concept. Some people said that it has been a dream come true.
“Ah, my long awaited dream... It's really happening. I check this page everyday and start crying like a fool,” says one netizen.
However, there are still some people that are sceptical if Pinoys will be ready for idol culture like Korea, Japan, and China.
“I wonder if the Pinoys are really ready for the idol culture.”
