President Rodrigo Duterte in his first State of the Nation Address (SONA) had declared a unilateral ceasefire against the New People's Army. The president expected the group to reciprocate the action within a given time.
However, hours after the declaration of the president, reports emerged of an attack against some military men.
The President then gave an ultimatum for the Communist Part of the Philippines (CPP) to explain the attack and reciprocate the government action.
While, Jose Maria Sison, CPP's leader, welcomed Duterte's declaration, there was no official declaration on the part of the group.
Recently, the president has convened the reds in Malacanan last Monday.
