Four Filipino jins are expected to go all-out to win in the Asian Taekwondo Olympic qualifying tournament from April 16-17 at the Marriot Grand Ballroom Convention Center in Pasay. The gold and silver medalists in the meet will qualify for the Rio Games in August.
The Philippines will be represented by Samuel Morrison in the men’s minus 80-kilogram division and Pauline Louise Lopez in the women’s minus 57-kg division. Other local jins that will bid for a spot in Rio are Fil-Am Kristopher Robert Uy in the men’s plus 80-kg class, and Kirstie Elaine Alora in the women’s plus 67-kg category. The Nationals hope to draw inspiration from crowd support as they will enjoy home-court advantage.
A draw to determine the opponents of all participants in the two-day contest will be held today. It will be followed by a meeting at 4 p.m. with the team managers of the 34 participating countries.
Aside from the Olympic Qualifying tournament, our country will play host to the 4th Asian Taekwondo Poomsae Championship and the 2nd Asian Para Taekwondo Championship on April 18, and the 22nd Asian Taekwondo Championship on April 19 to 20.
The Olympic qualifier is sponsored by Smart, PLDT, Meralco, and MVP Sports Foundation.
