Speaking at a press conference on Thursday (April 14) in her country, reigning Miss Universe Pia Wurtzbach advised her would-be successor to be holistically prepared.
“She has to be prepared in a lot of aspects, not just how she’s going to maintain her beauty,” she said pertaining to her preferred successor. “She has to have genuine interest in what’s happening in the country and the world… [She] has to have a stand and opinion on it. [She] has to be well-spoken and brave.”
In the Miss Universe pageant last year, the candidates were asked about issues in their home country during the Question and Answer portion. Pia Wurtzbach was asked of her opinion about the American military presence in the Philippines.
Wurtzbach said that the two countries have always had a good relationship with each other and that she sees no problem with being welcoming to the Americans. Her answer to such a controversial issue drew a mixture of praise and criticism. After winning the title, she came home to a grand celebration.
The beauty queen is once again back in the Philippines to pass on her sash and crown to the next Miss Universe – Philippines on Sunday (April 17).
Before she became the country’s representative to the international beauty pageant, Wurtzbach joined the local tilt thrice. In 2013, she was able to claim the first runner-up spot. The following year, she was not able to win any title. Emerging even more determined, she made a third attempt and finally won Binibining Pilipinas – Universe in 2015.
“[The Miss Universe title] has to be something she really wants. It’s not just a 1-day thing,” she said.
Wurtzbach wants the next winner to think about what happens after she gets that “beautiful, shining crown.”
“What do you plan to do after that crown is put on your head?” she asked.
The grand coronation night of Binibining Pilipinas 2016 will be held at the Smart Araneta Coliseum and will have a late telecast that same night on ABS-CBN.
