- Mayor Herbert Bautista had admitted that his brother, Hero, failed the voluntary drug test last week
- Hero was elected as a councilor in the May 9 polls
- Bautista’s brother tested positive for shabu and marijuana use
Quezon City Mayor Herbert Bautista admitted on Wednesday during a closed-door meeting with QC department heads that his brother, Hero, was the councilor who failed the drug test conducted at the city hall last week. The QC councilor tested positive for shabu (methamphetamine hydrochloride) and marijuana.
Sources who attended the meeting told the Inquirer that the mayor was visibly emotional as he admitted his brother’s drug use. Last week, reports emerged that one of the 36 city councilors failed the voluntary drug tests.
The sources added that Bautista promised to make his brother undergo drug rehabilitation and a spiritual counseling.
Hero – who was elected as Quezon City’s fourth district councilor in the May 9 elections – would be facing sanctions for failing the drug test. However, the sanctions that would be imposed remain unclear. Bautista promised to not use his power and influence to get his brother off his predicament.
In an earlier interview, Bautista told the media that he was not yet sure who the councilor was.
“I really don’t know. If he’s my sibling, he should be rehabilitated,” Bautista said.
When asked by the reporters why he mentioned his brother, Bautista explained: “He has just been elected councilor. Maybe it’s him, we do not know.”
However, Vice Mayor Joy Belmonte said that Bautista already knew about his brother’s drug results as early as Thursday last week. She said that the mayor would be responsible for imposing sanctions on Hero. Analysts say that a suspension or dismissal from his post is possible.
