- A Filipina housemaid in Kuwait was arrested for alleged ties with the terror group ISIS
- Philippine authorities are asking Kuwaiti officials to have access to the imprisoned Filipina to learn about her identity and the other details surrounding her case
- OFWs in Kuwait are concerned about the negative effects on Filipinos if the woman is proven guilty of having ties with ISIS
A Filipino woman was arrested in Kuwait for allegedly being a supporter of terror group ISIS (Islamic State in Iraq and Syria). The Filipina – born in 1984 – worked as a housemaid in Kuwait after entering the country in June.
She is currently in prison being investigated by Kuwaiti State Security officers. Authorities were able to trace Telegram app messages to the email account of the Filipina.
According to reports from Kuwait, the Filipina had been using the messaging app to contact her Somali husband in Libya – a suspected ISIS member – and she had also been set to conduct a suicide bombing terrorist attack in Kuwait.
Department of Foreign Affairs spokesman Charles Jose said that the Philippines has not yet been officially notified of the Filipina’s arrest in Kuwait. However, the department will ask Kuwaiti officials – from the Kuwait Ministry of Interior and Ministry Foreign Affairs – to have access to the imprisoned housemaid to learn about her identity and the other details of the case.
"If warranted, our Embassy will extend the necessary consular and legal assistance," Jose said.
Ako-OFW Founding Chairman Dr. Chie Umandap expressed concern about the Filipina’s arrest, saying that OFWs (overseas Filipino workers) in Kuwait and Filipinos who want to enter Kuwait will be negatively affected if the Filipina is proven guilty of having ties with ISIS.
"Talagang nakakabahala itong nangyaring balita na ito sa ating kapwa OFW. Sana ipanalangin natin na hindi ito totoo at mabilis na siya ay mapawalang-sala dahil magiging lalong mahigpit ang checking ng gobyerno [ng Kuwait] sa mga Pilipino,” Umandap explained.
(This news about our fellow OFW is very alarming. Let us pray that she is innocent of the allegations because otherwise, the government of Kuwait will tighten up the monitoring of Filipinos in the country.)
The ISIS is considered as one of the most violent extremist militant groups in the world, responsible for several terror attacks, abductions and executions. A video of ISIS was recently found, urging Jihadists to attack the Miss Universe event to be held in the Philippines in 2017. – Kami Media
