Did you know that 50% of Filipino families consider themselves poor?
In a survey done by the Social Weather Stations (SWS) last quarter of 2015, among 1,200 respondents which can be equivalent to 11.2 million families, half believed that they were struggling in their everyday lives.
It’s not surprising given the rising price of commodities and the everyday woes of a Filipino. Everyone has their own bad days. However, if you would look around then you might find yourself thankful for the better life you’re experiencing compared to others.
That’s what a Facebook user found out when she stumbled upon a couple who walks every day despite their old age just to sell vegetables. She immediately shared it on social media and asked for any form of help for the two.
85-year old Efepanio Bacus and his 82-year old spouse, Conchita Bacus, knock from door to door in the hopes of selling patola (sponge gourd) and Saba, a variety of banana.
That day, the original anonymous user who posted the story and his father felt bad for Efepanio who was carrying a heavy wooden pole with 2 heavy sacks of vegetables on both ends. They immediately bought everything in the hopes of helping the man.
Bacus narrated that he usually goes with his wife but after being robbed of their pots, pans, and radio, her wife just decided to stay home that day to guard their home.
The post which was posted on the Facebook page, Tambayan ni BERTO, now has more than 9,200 likes and was shared by 9,767 people.
The top commenter asked where the couple’s children who should have helped them were. He hoped to lend a hand to the couple even just by sharing the post. No additional information on whether the Bacus couple has any offspring.
Someone suggested for the pair to seek help from the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) in order to receive an allowance since they’re both senior citizens.
According to gov.ph, Filipinos who are 60-years old or older should receive a 20% discount and Value Added Tax (VAT) exemption in medical-related, domestic transportation, entertainment places, admission fees, funeral services.
