Kidapawan farmers remain in jail for not owning valid IDs

HIGHLIGHT: Of the 79 farmers jailed in Kidapawan City, North Cotabato an unfortunate few will remain detained despite singer Aiza Seguerra and her wife Liza Diño's successful efforts in raising the funds for their bail bond.

This is a result of the detainees not owning any valid identification cards (IDs).

The couple, with the assistance of fellow artists and groups, were able to raise P546,000.00 to post bail for all of the 79 individuals arrested during a mass engagement in the city. On Wednesday, Kidapawan Municipal Trial Court Judge Rebecca De Leon, minimized the bail of the 79 farmers from P12,000.00 to P6,000.00.

 Chair of the Kilusang Magbubukid sa Pilipinas in North Cotabato, Jerry Alborme, states that only half of the people held in custody, which encompasses women and elderly, own IDs.

Reports say that a few of the detainees do not even have birth certificates or memberships with PhilHealth and SSS (Social Security System.)

In March 27, 6, 000 farmers went down to barricade the province's major highway to elicit attention for their plight -hungry as the local government did not give rice supply amid drought crisis.
