HIGHLIGHT: Not to be outdone by Liberal Party’s (LP) standard-bearer Mar Roxas, PDP-Laban Presidental candidate and Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte now has his own comic book as well, made by the same artist who also drew Roxas’ “Sa Gitna ng Unos.”
However, veteran Filipino comics artist Karl Comendador said that way before he was commissioned by the LP to do the much-criticized “sa Gitna ng Unos,” (In the Middle of the Storm) he has already finished work on “Digong: Ang Kanlungan ng mga Inaapi at Inabuso” (Digong: Hero of the Aggrieved and Abused) as early as last year.
Comendador gave life to the story penned by former Atlas Komiks editor KC Cordero and Atlas writer JM Estrabela. The 10-page comic book tells the story of Duterte fighting a criminal gang causing unrest in Davao City. It also shows the presidential candidate giving prosthetic legs to a young boy whose both legs have been amputated.
“I particularly worked hard on the face so that I can get his likeness,” Comendador said of his latest published work which is currently being distributed in Mindanao.
While he agreed to do commissioned work for Roxas, Comendador admits to being a staunch supporter of the the Davao mayor. “Si Digong, may isang salita ‘yan. Makikita mo yung disiplina. Sinabi nga niya, dito sa Pilipinas, justice is optional. Kailangan natin yung disiplina, and we need strong leadership,” he said.
(You can trust Digong’s word. You can see his discipline. He once said, here in the Philippines, justice s optional. We need discipline, ad we need strong leadership.)
