- All of the passengers and crew members survived the incident but one firefighter was killed by the fire
On Wednesday, Flight EK521 crashed and burned in Dubai. The 282 passengers and 18 crew members escaped safely but one firefighter was killed as he tried to put out the fire which was consuming the aircraft. The video showing the passengers while they were trying to escape has gone viral.
The raw footage shows the frightened passengers screaming, shouting and panicking. Many of the passengers slid down the emergency chutes and ran for their lives as the aircraft was burning down. Some passengers also took their luggage before escaping from the aircraft.
“It was actually really terrifying. As we were landing there was smoke coming out in the cabin. People were screaming and we had a very hard landing. We left by going down the emergency slides and as we were leaving on the runway we could see the whole plane catch fire; it was horrifying,” Flight EK521 passenger Sharon Maryam Sharji said.
The crash reportedly happened due to the mistake of the pilot. He allegedly attempted a landing maneuver which involved going around and increasing height but he crashed and broke the engine instead.
The tragic accident also resulted in the cancellation of dozens of scheduled flights in Dubai. Among the 300 aboard the aircraft: 226 were Indians, 24 were Britons and 11 were from the United Arab Emirates.
Saif Al Suwaidi, the UAE’s General Civil Aviation Authority (GCA) director general, commended the brave firefighter who sacrificed his life in trying to extinguish the flames.
"I salute his ultimate sacrifice that kept many from harm’s way. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family," he said.
The Emirates airline has a strong safety history and this was only its third major incident since it was founded in 1985.
