Pinoy Pride: Manny and Pia meet in PH

Boxing superstar and People’s Champ Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao met with Miss Universe 2015 Pia Wurtzbach met in Quezon City, Philippines and gifted the beauty queen a “Miss Universe pink” boxing gloves.

Pacquiao was having lunch after his motorcade from Makati City, while Wurtzbach was attending another activity in the area when the two Filipinos who brought honor to the country had a chance to meet at the Novotel in Araneta Center, Cubao.

The boxing superstar has just returned to the country after winning the third boxing match with Timothy Bradley. He has repeatedly said that the fight with Bradley would be his last and he would now focus on his political career.

In an interview after the fight, he said: “Yes, as of now I am retired,” Pacquiao said. “I am going to go home and think about it, but I want to be with my family. I want to serve the people [of the Philippines].”

PacMan started his professional boxing career at the age of 16 in 1995, which eventually led to the boxer from Saranggani province winning world titles in 8 divisions. He was named “Fighter of the Decade” for the 2000’s by the Boxing Writers Association of America (BWAA) and was a three-time The Ring “Fighter of the Year” awardee.

Wurtzbach told the press after meeting the boxing superstar: "I am a big fan of Manny Pacquiao."

"I was very happy to be in his presence earlier. I admire him as a boxer," the beauty queen added.

The beauty queen is back in Manila to crown her successor as Binibining Pilipinas – Universe, in a grand coronation night on April 17 to be telecast live on ABS-CBN.

It is known to many that Wurtzbach joined the local beauty tilt thrice before winning the title to represent the country in the Miss Universe 2015 pageant held in Las Vegas. Her crowning as Miss Universe is one of the most talked about coronations, if not the most, in the pageant’s history when American host Steve Harvey wrongly announced Miss Colombia as the winner. He later on went back to the stage, showed the actual results, and called Miss Philippines as the rightful owner of the Miss Universe crown.

Apart from her beauty and brains, Wurtzbach was admired all over the world, the universe rather, for her grace and poise amidst the chaos in the announcement and the issues that ensued after it. She is now promoting her advocacy including HIV-awareness and access to medical care.
