Reigning Miss Universe Pia Wurtzbach arrived home in Manila on Wednesday (April 13), days ahead of the coronation night of this year’s Binibining Pilipinas beauty pageant.
The beauty queen is set to crown the next Binibining Pilipinas – Universe, who might actually do a back-to-back win for the country in the next Miss Universe (Miss U) pageant.
In the history of the Miss Universe pageant, Venezuela is the first and so far, only country to have won the title consecutively. Venezuela’s Dayana Mendoza won the pageant in 2008 and passed on her Miss U crown to her own country’s representative, Stefania Fernandez, in 2009.
Colombia seemed to have made a similar feat last year with Paulina Vega, Miss Universe 2014, who already placed the crown on Ariadna Gutierrez, only to be taken back a few minutes after when Steve Harvey corrected his own mistake in announcing the winner. The American host eventually showed the actual results and called on the Philippines’s Pia Wurtzbach as the rightful winner of the 64 Miss Universe pageant.
Forty ladies are competing this year to be the country’s representative to the following international pageants: Miss Universe, Miss International, Miss Supranational, Miss Intercontinental, and Miss Grand International.
"This year’s exciting roster consists of local pageant winners, graduates from top schools, artists, sports and fashion enthusiasts, and working professionals who excel in their respective fields. Representing various provinces in the country, the Top 40 candidates bested hundreds of aspirants that went through rigorous screenings in January," the Binibing Pilipinas website stated.
Pia Wurtzbach is scheduled to have a press conference on Thursday, April 14.
The 2016 Binibining Pilipinas Grand Coronation night will be held on Sunday (April 17) at the Smart Araneta Coliseum, and will be telecast live on ABS-CBN.
