- Last week, House Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez called Congress to probe the proliferation of drugs in a local penitentiary during Senator Leila de Lima’s term as Department of Justice Secretary
- In response, the Senator said that Pantaleon should have conducted his research before suggesting an investigation
- However, De Lima said she is more than willing to cooperate with any investigation if the query would help reform prison systems
After House Speaker of the 17th Congress Pantaleon Alvarez called for an investigation of Senator Leila de Lima for the alleged proliferation of drug use in a local penitentiary, the Senator replied that Alvarez should research first before conducting his probe.
‘Ang advice ko lang po kay Speaker Alvarez is that alamin rin n’ya po kung ano ‘yung mga ginawa ko na mga hakbang noong ako po ay DOJ (Department of Justice) secretary…Mag-research naman po sila kung ano po ang aking mga ginawa sa pakikilaban din sa ilegal na droga,’ De Lima said following President Rodrigo Duterte’s State of the Nation Address.
(My advice for Speaker Alvarez is to research first the things I did as the Secretary of DOJ to fight illegal drugs.)
However, Senator De Lima is willing to cooperate with any probe if the investigation would help reform the prison system.
‘It really depends on the thrust of the investigation. If the House inquiry is really towards drafting laws in order to reform the prison system para mawala na totally yung mga prison-based criminality dyan sa Bilibid, I’m more than willing to be involved,’ she said.

The Senator then continued to say that it was unfair for them to suggest that she enabled drugs.
‘Huwag naman ho silang ganyan na parang nag i-insinuate sila na parang ako na ngayon ang coddler ng mga drug addict. It’s so, so, so unfair,’ she said.
(Hopefully, they are not suggesting that I am a coddler of drug addicts. It's so, so unfair.)
Last week, Pantaleon asked Congress to probe into the proliferation of drugs in the New Bilibid Prison during Senator De Lima’s term as DOJ Secretary.
Yet, the former DOJ secretary stated that if she were to be installed to chair the justice and human rights committee, she would implement actions to fight drug-related crime. - Kami Media
