'The Voice Kids Philippines' this year is proving to be a tough competition with the incredible line up of talents. It is becoming apparent too that 'The Voice' judges Bamboo Mañalac, Lea Salonga, and Sharon Cuneta all have their work cut out for them in choosing the best of the best.
Last Saturday was an instance of tough competition during Team Bamboo’s Battle Rounds. In one group, the contest was between teammates’ Arnie Maun, Bernard Badato and Miguel Suarez. The trio sang 'Doo Bidoo,' a popular song way back in the 80s that was performed by the APO Hiking Society. 'Doo Bidoo' was also re-arranged and covered by rock band Kamikazee in 2006.
All three kids did their best during the July 23 performance, but it was 12-year-old Bernard who outlasted his teammates Arnie and Miguel to win the Battle Rounds. According to their team coach, Bamboo, what he liked about Bernard’s performance was the way he sang as if from head to toe, describing it: “…buong katawan mo ang kumakanta.”
(Your whole body was singing.)
Bernard is from Camarines Norte and his father is a street food vendor who had to give up his livelihood because of a debilitating illness. Bernard, who performed and joined Bamboo’s Team in Episode 14, is also the youngest of four siblings. During Bernard’s Blind Auditions where he sang 'Bulag, Pipi at Bingi', all three judges turned their chairs around to vie for the kid singer.
Following the Battle Rounds, which started just last July 17, will be the Sing-offs, wherein 24 contestants will sing their way to the Live Shows, and then the Finals.
'The Voice Kids' Season 3 in the Philippines is directed by Johnny Manahan and airs every Saturday and Sunday evening at ABS-CBN.
