Sen. Aquilino Pimentel III , after months of rumors and speculations, has been elected as the new Senate president with 20 senators voting in his favor over rival Sen. Ralph Recto with three votes during Monday, July 25.
Pimental, Duterte's partymate in Partido ng Demokratikong Pilipino-Lakas ng Bayan (PDP-Laban) had earlier been rumored to dominate the race for senate president after 19 senators expressed support to his candidacy early on.
Meanwhile, former Senate President Franklin Drilon will now be the new Senate President Pro-tempore after all senators present during the first regular senate session voted unanimously for the leader of the Liberal Party in the senate.

Senator Ralph Recto is expected to assume the post of the Minority Floor Leader while Senator Vicente "Tito" Sotto III is the Majority Floor Leader.
Prior to joining the senate, Pimentel, who topped the 1990 bar, served as commissioner of the National Youth Commission having represented Mindanao. He also worked as a professor at the FEU Institute of Law – La Salle Business School, JD – MBA program and University of the East College of Law.
Sotto who had earlier expressed his full support to the senator who hails from Mindanao, nominated Pimentel. Sen. Juan Miguel Zubiri who called Pimentel his former bitter rival seconded the motion clearning up the speculations of rift between the two. Zubiri also voted in favor of Pimentel.
Koko, son of former Senate President Nene Pimentel is expected to support President Duterte's initiatives in his administration for the next six years. -MR, Kami Media
