Defending champion and perennial powerhouse National Capital Region (NCR) took seven gold medals on Monday, the first day of 2016 Palarong Pambansa in Legazpi, Albay.
NCR collected golds in events such as elementary boys shot put, two in the secondary boys division of chess (blitz individual and blitz team), and one in secondary girls chess (blitz team), among others. NCR also had five silver medals.
Running second Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR) follows NCR with a 6-7-3 medal tally so far, while Northern Mindanao and Calabarzon are tied with four golds each.
Davao’s Mia Meagey Niñura stole the show in the opener by bagging the first gold for her region and smashing the 2015 secondary girls 3,000-meter (3,000m) run record in athletics. She clocked in 10 minutes and 03.4 seconds to clinch the gold, erasing the 10:10.16 record that Northern Mindanao's Jian Calis made in 2015 in Tagum City, Davao del Norte.
Niñura , the student-athlete from Kapatagan National High School in Davao del Sur bested her long-time rival Calis after placing second for two straight years.
Gold medalists will get the usual Php 3,000 incentive, while the silver and bronze medalists this year will get 1,500 and P750, respectively. Record-breakers will receive an additional 3,000 pesos.
The week-long youth games opened on April 10 and will conclude on April 18.
