-Pokwang said she is thankful for all of Nicolas’ help in the success of her career
You may know Eric Nicolas from the recently concluded Season 2 of “Your Face Sounds Familiar,” but the comedian is also known for discovering fellow comedian, Pokwang. Nicolas revealed this at last Friday’s episode of “Magandang Buhay.”
It all began when Nicolas, when he was still working at a Cubao comedy bar, saw Pokwang come up on stage. He recounts: “Sa comedy bar kasi, comedian ako doon, pumasok sila (Pokwang) at gumimik sila as guests... Aba, pumanhik ito, naka-inom na, nandoon din 'yung mga may-ari tapos banter, banter, ayaw magpatalo. So bumaba ako, sabi ko, 'Boss, okay ito wala tayong babae, puwede nating ipasok.' Noong time na 'yon, wala siyang (Pokwang) trabaho.”
(“I’m a comedian at the comedy bar where Pokwang once went with friends as guests. She went up to the stage after having had a drink, and the owners were also there and saw her make banters onstage. She wouldn’t let up. So I went down and told the owner, ‘Boss, this is good as we don’t have a female comedian, we can get her.’ At the time, Pokwang wasn’t employed.”)
Nicolas went on to share that he was the one who encouraged Pokwang when she was just starting out at the comedy bar. He recalls: "Sabi ko, kaya mo 'yan. Tapos kinabukasan bumalik, binigyan [namin] ng set, ang galing. Mga ilang panahon, ang dami na, may followers na siya. May mga nagpupunta na. Magaling kasi siya kaya ganoon."
(“I told her, you can do it. Then the next day, she came back and we gave her a set, and she was really good. Time passed and she began to have many followers. People would come to see her. It was because she was really good at it.”)
Following Pokwang’s comedy bar success, Nicolas then urged the comedienne to join ABS-CBN's “Clown in a Million” contest, where she would later emerge as the winner.
Nicolas went on to share that it was him who first joined the competition, where he both won and lost in the two times he was a part of it. But after his stints, one of the writers of the show called him up looking for a comedienne, to which he recommended Pokwang. After her “Clown in a Million” victory, opportunities began to open up for Pokwang and although Pokwang attributes her success to Nicolas, the comedian says it was really the comedienne’s talent that really paved the way for her career’s success.
As for Pokwang, she says she will always be grateful to Nicolas for encouraging her along the way. –KJ, Kami Media
