The photos of an 85-year-old man walking under the heat of the sun to sell sponge gourd or “patola” in the streets have gone viral, earning the praise and sympathy of netizens in the country.
Many Filipinos in poverty try to fix their problems by committing crimes such as stealing, kidnapping or pushing drugs. Other people, despite having able bodies, decide not to work and depend on others for their living.
Efepanio Bacus is different. Despite being 85 years old, he has no problem working hard for the welfare of his family. He usually goes out to sell vegetables, with his 82-year-old wife, Conchita but he was alone when the photos were captured.
It turns out that a thief came into their humble home and stole some of their possessions such as their pots, pans, and radio. For this reason, Conchita decided to stay home to protect their possessions.
Despite the hardships and trials they face, the old couple, Efepanio and Conchita are determined to earn their living through honest means.
The elderly couple from San Jose Maniki Kapalong, Davao Del Norte have also gained a lot of fans from the online community. Mike Carmela Asuncion captured the photos of the couple and shared them on Facebook where they have gone viral.
Many social media users who commented on the couple's photos said that they are hoping that President Rodrigo “Rody” Duterte will be able to solve the problem of poverty among the Filipino people and not just the illegal drug trade in the Philippines. Many are also wishing that Efepanio and Conchita can finally retire and enjoy their old age together. -Kami Media
