This is the story of an ordinary man
People from Manjhi’s village, India, needs to go around the mountain to reach the nearest town. It is a long 55-kilometer (34-mile) journey; the reason why Dashrath Manjhi’s wife didn’t reach the hospital. The selfless laborer said he didn’t want any other villager to suffer the same fate as his wife.
He instead worked day and night to chip away at the mountain using only a hammer and chisel – reducing the distance to only 15 kilometres by creating a path between the rocks. Reports said that when Manjhi first started breaking the mountain, locals from his village thought he was crazy. However, as he progressed on creating the path, the villagers later changed their minds.
His gargantuan efforts took until 1982 to complete – with a path which is around 360 feet long and more than nine metres wide in several sections. Even after finishing the path, the local government took another three decades in order to convert the path into a proper road.
This incredible story has been adapted into a major Bollywood film «Manjh: The Mountain Man». Bollywood star Nawazuddin Siddiqui, who played the lead role in movie Manjhi – The Mountain Man, said the story is beautiful and compelling.
“He made the impossible possible and his work has helped thousands,” the actor said.
“The most difficult aspect was to capture the madness. His work is extraordinary. He should be an inspiration and an icon for the youth,”Siddiqui added.
Manjhi died from cancer in 2007 and was recognised with a state funeral in Bihar.
