Despite all odds, a small-time basketball player from Albay led torchlighting ceremony in the biggest sporting event of the country.

Francis Everesto, a 26-year old basketball player, was pushed on a wheelchair by PBA star Terrence Romeo to the friendship urn to signify the start of Larong Pambansa last Sunday, April 10, at the Albay Sports and Tourism Complex.

This was the first time in 59 years that the Larong Pambansa torch-lighting ceremony was led by a Person With Disability (PWD).

Malaking kasiyahan sa akin kasi isa ako sa napili ng JCI Legazpi para po dito sa Palarong Pambansa," Everesto said of the ceremony.

(I am happy that I was picked by JCI Legaspi for this Palarong Pambansa.)

Francis has never participated in the nationwide competition before, nor has he won any medal. However, this only proves that anyone can belong to the world of sports.

Francis said a word of advice to individuals who are like him:

"Para sa mga katulad ko po, huwag po silang mawalan ng pag-asa dahil habang may buhay, may pag-asa."

(For the people like me, I hope you don't lose hope because as long as there is life, there is hope.)
