- Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte is set to give his first SONA on July 25
- The State of the Union Address (SONA) is a yearly speech given by the President in order to address the Filipino people about the state of the nation
- A task force area is already busy preparing and cleaning the Batasang Pambansa for the event
With July 5 quickly approaching, the Batasang Pambansa, headquarters of the Philippine House of Representatives, is vigorously preparing for the newly elected President Rodrigo Duterte’s first State of the Nation Address (SONA).
In the SONA, President Duterte will address the nation and inform the Filipino citizens the state of the nation and his plans for the upcoming years.
More than a week before Duterte is to deliver his speech, cleaning of the large plenary hall has already been commenced, starting with the 1,650 chairs.
A red carpet event, the SONA has been labelled as the "Oscars of Philippine politics," with many of the officials and guests wearing glamorous outfits created by prominent Filipino designers.
However, Presumptive House Speaker Pantaleon “Bebot” Alvarez hopes that this year the guests would dress less extravagant.
The internationally acclaimed director Brillante Mendoza, who is going to be the SONA’s pro-bono director, also conducted an ocular inspection of the Batasan Pambansa. Joining Mendoza in the ocular were Palace Communications Office chief Martin Andanar, lawyer Paola Alvarez, daughter of Bebot Alvarez and member of the SONA preparations team.
At the Presidential Legislative Liaison Office of the Batasang Pambansa, Mendoza also directs representatives from the Presidential Broadcast Staff Radio-Television Malacañang (PBS-RTVM) where to place their cameramen and equipment to broadcast the speech.
As SONA director, Mendoza hopes to expose Duterte’s message and display how the incoming President connects with his citizens.
According to House Secretary General Marilyn Barua Yap, who heads the task force in charge of SONA preparations, the final meeting to ‘fix loose ends’ for the arrangements at the Batasan Pambansa would be held on Wednesday, July 20.
However, the task force believes that all the details pertaining to the security, food, guest list, and all other preparations would be completed by Thursday, July 21. - NB, Kami Media
