- Vice President Leni Robredo said that she trusts President Rodrigo Duterte to follow the law while fighting the illegal drug trade in the country
- Robredo pointed out that she is optimistic about Duterte’s respect for the law because he is a lawyer and a former prosecutor
- She also urged government officials to investigate the recent rise in vigilante killings of drug criminals in order to avoid abuse
Vice President Maria Leonor “Leni” Robredo on Tuesday has expressed her support to President Rodrigo “Rody” Duterte's promise to crack down on illegal drugs and criminality saying that the president can do it without having to break the law.
“We support President Duterte’s declaration that the fight against drugs and crime must be done with an uncompromising exercise of the rule of law,” Robredo said. She also pointed out that she is optimistic that Duterte will respect the law since he is a lawyer and a former prosecutor.
However, Robredo also warned the public about the increasing practice of vigilantism in recent weeks.
“While we are one with the fight against drugs, we are concerned with the growing culture of vigilantism and violence,” the vice president said.
Robredo is also concerned that the war against drugs and criminality might go out of hand and hurt the innocents if the government will turn a blind eye on vigilantes. She urged the government to look closely at the rising number of people suspected of illegal drug activities that are being killed outside of legitimate police operations.
“We encourage authorities concerned to look into these cases. If there is really culpability, then justice requires that appropriate cases be filed and that those proven to be accountable be punished,” she said.
After Duterte won the May 9 presidential election, the police have reported over a hundred killings of suspected drug pushers and users nationwide. Duterte’s campaign focused on eliminating the illegal drug trade by being harsh and aggressive towards drug lords and pushers.
Philippine National Police (PNP) Chief Director General Ronald “Bato” dela Rosa has promised the public that he will only defend the policemen who will kill drug criminals during legitimate police operations and not those who kill in an illegal manner. -Kami Media
