Duterte's accomplishments in his first week

President Rodrigo Roa Duterte assumed the nation's top office and his first week is commendable.

Below are the top five things that Duterte have accomplished in his first week as president of the Republic of the Philippines.

1. He is pro-poor

It is a common campaign tactic for politicians to show that they are pro-poor. We have seen "Erap Para Sa Mahirap"and "Kung Walang Corrupt, Walang Mahirap" presidential campaigns in the past, but we ended up with leaders from the chosen elite and political clans. What sets Duterte apart from previous presidents is that he claims that he truly understands the needs of the poor as he came from a common family in Davao. His house is nothing compared to Binay's estate in Batangas and his social circle is nothing compared to the Aquinos and Cojuangcos.

His house is nothing compared to Binay's estate in Batangas and his social circle is nothing compared to the Aquinos and Cojuangcos. That is why Duterte's initial policies are aimed at the grassroots and micro level since he wants the people at the bottom of society to feel the change. Most of Duterte's supporters are from the masses, which composed a large sum of voters.

2. He looks at justice in the perspective of the victims

Many people criticized Duterte for alleged extrajudicial killings. The Department of Justice and Commission of Human Rights voiced out their concerns over the Davao Death Squad to start a nationwide killing spree.

However, the new president believed in the Hammurabi code, "An eye for an eye; a tooth for a tooth". He is more partial to the victims on how they can attain justice. In one of his statements, he told the media to look the situation in the perspective of the victims of crimes and of families broken by drugs.

3. He retains policies that work

Despite being the newly-elected president, Duterte does not think highly of himself. The previous administration has great economic policies. Duterte admitted that he will sustain the policies and let the expert run the economy.

Duterte also retained the "wang-wang" ban by former President Aquino as he thinks that sirens are a nuisance.

4. He gains allies in Congress and Senate

During his campaign, many thinks that he will run into some problems as the local government units were controlled by the Liberal Party since its standard bearer Mar Roxas was the former DILG head. However, the mayor-turned-president started getting support from the Congress and the Senate (and he is not even trying). Elected LGU officials from other parties pledged allegiance to the administration and expressed support to his causes.

5. He is a man of his word

Duterte is a man of his word as he stressed that he will curb drugs and crime in the country when he became president. His appointed PNP Chief and some local government officials echo his call for a drug war. While some people are worried that a number of drug users and pushers are being killed in his first week, others applaud for the fast response.
