- Leni Robredo was recently appointed by President Duterte as the head of the Housing and Urban Development Coordinating Council (HUDCC)
- Fr. Edu Gariguez of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) affirmed the Vice President’s appointment
- The HUDCC was formerly headed by defeated presidential candidate Jejomar Binay
After the surprise appointment of Vice President Leni Robredo as head of the Housing and Urban Development Coordinating Council (HUDCC), Fr. Edu Gariguez of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) affirmed the decision.
Gariguez said that Robredo was a good choice, and that the CBCP will be expecting a better service from the agency. “This is thinking about what is good for the whole country and how she can be of service to the country. She has experience in working with the poor and civil society organizations. So that strength of hers is what we need,” he explained.
The executive secretary of the CBCP’s National Secretariat for Social Action even said that a lot of good qualities of Robredo would go to waste if she wasn’t given any cabinet position. He said: “Not just her potential but the very orientation that she could bring to the government, her orientation of servant leadership, propeople development and a genuine heart for the people.”
Duterte earlier said that he won’t give Robredo a Cabinet post in consideration of his friend, Ferdinand Marcos Jr’s feelings. Marcos was defeated by Robredo in a very tight VP race.
The HUDCC is the highest government agency that is responsible for housing in the country. It’s the same agency that was headed by former vice president Jejomar Binay.
Meanwhile, Gariguez also affirmed the appointments of Gina Lopez and Rafael Mariano to the Department of Environment and Natural Resources and Department of Agrarian Reform respectively.
“They are good choices, they are worthy people and are really fit for the job, not just to protect and pursue the interest of corporations and the ruling elite,” said Gariguez.
