- Pinopela won the championship at the 2016 A Capella Championships held at the Singapore Polytechnic Auditorium in Singapore last Saturday
- The Baguio City group was originally formed to compete at a local competition called Akapela Open
- Founded in 1999, the A Capella Championships is the only competition in Singapore dedicated to a cappella music
The aca-mazing group had only 12 minutes to complete their song selections. They opened with their own rendition of Adele’s “Skyfall” before breaking into a soul-aching cover of “All I Ask”. They ended their perfect run with a mash-up of Bruno Mars’ “Treasure” and Jessie J’s “Bang-Bang”.
According to the A Cappella’s website, Pinopela performed second to the last during the competition. All groups who competed in the singing tilt were judged based on these standards – musicality 60% and performance 40%.
In their official Facebook page, Pinopela shared that it was named champion in the international category, judges' choice, and overall champion in the competition. Two Pinopela members also garnered individual awards. Anthony Castillo was named the Most Impressive Soloist Award while Zsaris Mendioro took the gold in the looping category.
The looping category is for “individual vocalists using loop technology of their choice. The music content can be cover songs or original music and is not limited by styles. No instruments are allowed to be used – all sounds have to be produced with the human voice or the body on stage.”
The groups’ costumes were specially created for them by A-list designer Francis Libiran.
When these “AcaChamps” are not busy representing the country in international competitions, they perform for various functions, conferences, and weddings.
All eight Pinopela members hail from Baguio City and was part of the St. Louis University Glee Club. -IS, Kami Media
