- Defeated senatorial candidate Rafael Alunan III posted on Facebook that Vice President Leni Robredo should serve as President Rodrigo Duterte’s “de facto First Lady”
- Being a “de facto First Lady” would mean that Robredo would join Duterte during selected official functions
- Netizens have praised Alunan for promoting unity using his Facebook posts
Former Local Government Secretary Rafael Alunan III suggested on Saturday that Vice President Maria Leonor “Leni” Robredo is a perfect fit as the “de facto First Lady” of President Rodrigo Duterte in selected official functions.
“The VP can be the de facto First Lady accompanying the President in selected functions. Hindi tayo mapapahiya (We would not be embarrassed) with this superb 1-2 punch,” Alunan posted on Facebook.
Alunan – a defeated senatorial candidate under Duterte’s ticket – also uploaded four pictures showing the president and vice president in friendly poses during the change of command ceremony of the military on July 1 at Camp Aguinaldo, Quezon City.
He then cited some of the official functions that Robredo could attend with Duterte.
“Since the VP is next in line and a heartbeat away, it would be a good idea if (she) sits in the LEDAC, National Security Council, National Disaster Risk Reduction and Monitoring Council, National Peace and Order Council and be invited to NEDA and NAPC meetings even without a Cabinet portfolio,” Alunan added.
LEDAC stands for the Legislative Executive Development Advisory Council; NEDA refers to the National Economic and Development Authority; while NAPC pertains to the National Anti-Poverty Commission.
His Facebook posts about Duterte and Robredo have become viral, with more than 700 shares and over 4,000 likes as of yesterday. It has also received tons of praise for trying to promote unity among the two top executives in the country.
Robredo has not yet been given a Cabinet post by Duterte due to the latter’s friendly ties with defeated vice presidential candidate Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos II. Duterte also decided to hold a separate inauguration from Robredo last June 30. -DN, Kami Media
