Hundreds of people lost their lives in Baghdad bombing

- At least 123 people died on Sunday midnight after a huge bomb exploded in central Baghdad

- Most of the people who lost their lives in the attack were children

- This attack is the third mass slaughter carried out by the Islamic State

Hundreds of Iraqis were eating, shopping and just spending quality time with loved ones in central Baghdad last Saturday evening as a form of celebration for one of the last evenings of Ramandan.

However, such a joyous and festive night turned to be a nightmare when a huge bomb exploded shortly after midnight and instantly killed the lives of at least 123 individuals who were in Karrada. Such mass slaughter is considered to be the third to be executed by the Islamic State in three different countries within the past few days.

Karrada is a place filled with shops, hotels, and cafes and is considered to be a middle-class neighborhood and one of the busiest areas in Baghadad. The bombing is the first major assault as well as the deadliest single attack that took place in Baghdad this year.

The event is said to be due to the Iraqi forces retaking Falluja from the Islamic State in June. Falluja has been under the control of the Islamic State in the past two-and-a-half years. It is considered to be one of the places in Iraq or Syria combined that has been controlled by the Islamic State for the longest time.

Many have already feared that the liberation would result into a strike back such as this. However, nobody might have expected it would be this soon.

The Sunni extremists of the Islamic State said that they have just killed a gathering of Shiite Muslims. This could be in reference to the attack in Baghadad. However, Karrada is not only a place of Shiite Muslims. It is a place where Iraqis from all walks of life do several activities.

The bombing in Baghdad took place after 20 individuals lost their lives in a restaurant slaughter in Bangladesh. The individuals either died due to the bombing or were intentionally killed by swords and knives. The Islamic State, also referred to as ISIS or ISIL, claimed responsibility for the attack.

Furthermore, it was also only a few days ago when at least 40 people were killed by a coordinated suicide attack that took place on Istanbul’s main airport. The Islamic State was also blamed for the tragedy.
