According to Presidential Management Staff (PMS) head Bong Go, President Rodrigo Duterte has plans on watching Gilas Pilipinas play against France at the Mall of Asia (MOA) Arena this Tuesday, July 5.
The two teams would play on the opening day of the FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournament, in which 18 countries will play against each other until six teams are left. The six teams will then play against each other until winners of each set can get the chance to play in the 2016 Rio Olympics.
Go said that his boss would like to watch the show like any other basketball fan.
“Ang gusto ni Presidente, just as any other ordinary person [lang siya]. Ayaw niya yung special treatment, so merge lang siya sa public and just enjoy the game.”
(The President wants to appear like just any other ordinary person. He does not want any special treatment, so he will just merge with the public and just enjoy the game.)
Go also said that President Duterte wanted to watch the game to support the country’s elite basketball team despite not being a hardcore fan of the sport.
In response to Duterte’s possible attendance of the game, Samahan ng Basketbol ng Pilipinas president Manny Pangilinan said that the president is most welcome to come.
“There are indications he might come, but he’s a very busy man, so it’s really up to him. But he’s more than welcome to come,” he said.
