- Drug suspects surfaced in the barangay hall of Barangay Poblacion, Sarangani
- They surrendered after their names were placed on a barangay drug watchlist
- The Philippine National Police has reported that drug suspects killings are on the rise during its anti-illegal drugs operations
These drug suspects opted to surrender amidst intensifying anti-illegal drug operations conducted by the Philippine National Police (PNP).
Chairman Noel Morido, Sr. of Barangay Poblacion in Alabel, Sarangani, said that it took very little effort in convincing the drug suspects to surrender.
"Ito na lang yong chance nila kaya sumuko sila. Bigyan natin sila ng pagkakataon na makapagbago. At sinusuportahan natin ang ating pangulo na linisin ang mga barangay natin sa bansa," he said.
(This is their only chance that’s why they surrendered. Let’s give them a chance to change. We are supporting the President’s campaign in cleaning up the barangays in our country.)
Since drug suspect killings are on the rise, some of the suspects feared for their lives and opted to surrender instead.
"May nakapagsabi kasi sa akin, sir, na nasa listahan daw ako. Nag-surrender ako, sir, kasi ayaw kong mabaril na lang ako diyan habang naglalakad ako," said a 22-year-old drug suspect.
(Someone told me, sir, that I was on the list. Sir, I surrendered because I don’t want to get shot while walking.)
Most of those who surrendered are methamphetamine hydrochloride or shabu users.
Police Senior Inspector Marcelo Mendoza clarified that the drug watch list did not come from the PNP but the Barangay Anti-Drug Abuse Council.
"Sila talaga ang totoong may listahan kasi sila ang nakakaalam. Sila yong nasa area kaya kilala nila kung sinu-sino itong mga involve sa drugs sa kanilang barangay," he said.
(They are the ones with the list since they are the ones who know. They are in the area so they know who are involved in drugs in their respective barangays.)
Almost 500 drug suspects have surrendered to the authorities in Sarangani province. Authorities said that all those who surrender will undergo drug symposium before they will be recommended for technical training and benefit from any livelihood assistance. - IS, Kami Media
