100,000 prisoners executed anually in China

- Experts state that the prisoners are executed to have their hearts, livers, and other organs removed to use for transplants

- The findings were published in a 2007 study ‘Bloody Harvest: Revised Report into Allegations of Organ Harvesting of Falun Gong Practitioners in China’

- The Chinese government's campaign against the Falun Gong is linked to this practice

The report was researched and authored by former Canadian Secretary of State David Kilgour, human rights lawyer David Matas, and journalist Ethan Gutmann in an effort to expose China’s widespread medical wrong-doing.

The report reveals that approximately 1.5 million prisoners have had their organs removed at 712 liver and kidney transplant centers across China since 2000, with over 300,000 of those taking place at unregulated centers. It also found that many surgeons lost track of the number of transplants they had been asked to perform on a daily basis, with some having undertaken as many as six liver removals in one day.

The cause for this unprecendented practice is tied to the Chinese government’s campaign against the Falun Gong – a unique form of meditative practice established in 1992.

Due to its popularity, the Communist Part and public security organizations viewed Falun Gong as a potential threat due to its size, independence from the state, and spiritual teachings and has relentless fought to eradicate this practice. It is believed that Falun Gong practitioners are being executed “on demand” by the government to compensate for the country’s shortage of organ donors.

The authors claim that Falun Gong practitioners were forced to undergo medical tests before their results were put on a database of living organ sources so quick organ matches could be made.

The Chinese government denies such allegations. In a press conference, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying said, “I want to say that such stories about forced organ harvesting in China are imaginary and baseless — they don’t have any factual foundation.”

Instead, the Chinese government stated that only 10,00 organ transplants take place in the country each year.

However, the authors insist that the official figures are far lower than the actual quantity. Human rights lawyer, Matas said, “We can easily surpass the official Chinese figure just by looking at the two or three biggest hospitals. That increased discrepancy leads us to conclude that there has been a far larger slaughter of practitioners of Falun Gong for their organs than we had originally estimated. The ultimate conclusion is that the Chinese Communist Party has engaged the state in the mass killings of innocents.”

In 2014, China announced that it would end the harvesting of organs from executed prisoners and move to a voluntary donation-based system. - IS, Kami Media
