- Nelson Pepe lost his eyesight due to retinitis pigmentosa and a retinal detachment
- Despite his blindness, Pepe continued to climb trees and harvest fruits to provide for his family
- Thankfully, his 5-year-old daughter became his pair of eyes while performing his dangerous job
One of the main responsibilities of a father is to work and provide for his family. Nelson “Dodong” Pepe seems to have taken his responsibility to heart.
Even after going completely blind, Dodong has remained loyal to his duty of working hard. He would climb at least 60 coconut trees and harvest the fruits for P5 per tree or a total of at least P300 per day. Even though he does not earn much from his income, it is still enough to put food on the table.
But how can Dodong fulfill his physically demanding work if he has lost the ability to see?
Meet Jenny, Dodong’s 5-year-old daughter. She is the Robin to Dodong’s Batman,as she acts as his pair of eyes while working hard for the family.
With the help of the ABS-CBN show ‘Rated K,’ Dodong was able to undergo an eye check-up to see if there is any chance to regain his eyesight.
Unfortunately, the doctors found out that the hardworking father has a retinitis pigmentosa and a retinal detachment which makes it impossible to regain his sense of vision. The good news is that although the condition is hereditary, Jenny was free of it based on the eye exams she underwent.
The TV show also helped Dodong receive a P10,000 capital from the local social welfare to start a sari-sari store. He was also able to receive ampalaya (bittergourd) seeds and pigs which he can use to get additional income. The family was also provided with a better and safer home in Barangay Libas.
The father and daughter’s hard work has finally paid off.
