The Gilas Pilipinas national men’s basketball team has finally put an end to its miserable losing streak in Europe after beating Asia’s powerhouse team China, 72-69, to cap off its participation in the Imperial City Basketball Tournament in Italy.
The game between Gilas Pilipinas and China was their first match since their encounter at the FIBA Asia Championship finals last year which the latter team won.
Gilas Pilipinas’ Terrence Romeo led the team with a total of 18 points, with 11 of those scored in a crucial fourth quarter. The point guard also scored two important three-point baskets down the stretch which helped the Philippine national team survive the comeback of the Chinese team after wasting its 10-point lead.
Center Andray Blatche scored 14 points and grabbed 12 rebounds to help Romeo, while Jeff Chan and Jayson Castro scored 10 and 9 respectively.
After losing to Turkey by 35 points and to Italy by 36 points, the Gilas Pilipinas finally won in their last game for the European training tour by beating China. However, the Chinese team did not utilize two of its top players – ex-NBA player Yi Jianlian and NBA draft pick Zhou Qi – for the game.
After participating for two weeks in the European tournament, Gilas Pilipinas is set to go back to Manila, assess their performance, and prepare for the Olympic qualifier. The Philippine national team for men’s basketball is also set to play against Turkey on Friday at the Mall of Asia Arena, Pasay City for a friendly game.
