- Gansu province in China has been experiencing unusual weather lately
- Nine-year-old Li Jiaqi was sent flying by a tornado that passed through her school
- The girl sustained minor injuries from the incident
Ever had a beautiful day ruined by something absolutely unexpected? For the students of the Yuanquan Town Elementary School in Gansu province, that is exactly what happened. The skies are a pale and beautiful shade of blue, the birds are chirping sweetly, the breeze is cool and gentle, when suddenly one of their classmates got swept up in a surprise tornado during a school celebration.
Yes, you read that right. This town in northwestern China has been experiencing a lot of unusual weather activity during the past few months, and this is the most recent incident. Last March, a ten-minute sandstorm breezed in out of nowhere and left the town covered in two inches of sand. In the following month, a tornado dropped by for a surprise visit and sent a girl flying.
Hundreds of children were assembled outside at the playground for an after-school sporting event as a part of an annual tradition that encourages the students to work together to finish athletic challenges and to instill teamwork. This year, however, they learned how to stay alert and follow instructions as the wind funnel suddenly appeared and teachers began ordering their students to lie on the ground and bunch up next to each up other.
The warning came too late for nine-year-old Li Jiaqi. As onlookers recorded the freak storm, they also inevitably captured a footage of the young girl being lifted up into the air. She was thrown kicking and screaming up into the sky, along with coats, bags and sports equipment. The whole ordeal lasted for about two minutes, and then the land spout disappeared and she dropped back to the ground.
Miraculously, a trip to the hospital showed that she barely needed medical attention. Despite having been plucked from the ground and tossed nearly twenty feet into the air, she walked away merely two hours after her arrival with just some minor scratches and bruises. Her parents and teachers said that though she is a bit shaken up, she is still in high spirits.
Looks like Dorothy isn't the only child who can twirl through a tornado!
