Vice Presidentiable Bongbong Thinks DOTC Is Source of Many Problems; Calls for Abaya's Resignation

HIGHLIGHT: After his campaign sortie in the CAMANAVA area (Caloocan, Malabon, Navotas and Valenzuela) , vice presidentiable Bongbong Marcos called out Transportation and Communications Secretary Jun Abaya, saying that the department he is manning has been the "source of so many problems."

Senator and aspiring VP Marcos made the statement while campaigning on Tuesday. For Marcos, the Department of Transportation and Communication's (DOTC) performance is getting worse.

“With Secretary Abaya, I’m sorry but DOTC has been the source of so many problems. When he came in, we had hoped he would be the one to rationalize his department. But he has been a disappointment kasi walang maayos na nangyari (because nothing good happened).” Marcos said in an interview.

He made the statement in light of the recent power outage in Ninoy Aquino International Airport Terminal 3 (NAIA), which lasted for 5 hours and caused 80 cancelled flights both domestic and international.

In a 2015 interview Abaya was quoted saying “I'm repeating that service in government is really a privilege not even a right so therefore, it can be taken away any time.”

This was after Marcos' rival for vice presidency Senator Chiz Escudero told the DOTC Secretary that he should resign after the consecutive national outcry about bullet planting in airports and failed Metro Rail Transit (MRT) service, among others.

In the same vein, presidentiable Sen. Grace Poe said, “I personally think we deserve a better DOTC secretary. Perhaps Secretary Abaya is very intelligent; but needs to focus on their projects to deliver on time,”  referring to the acquisition of 48 new train cars for MRT 3.
