Amidst Complaints, Comelec Cancels 26 M Plan for Bib Vests

After the overwhelming negative reaction that cry overspending, Comelec has junked the plan to produce bib vests with a collective worth of P26. 55 Million.

Originally planned to identify Board of Elections Inspectors (BEI), Comelec Chairman Andres Bautista said that they would provide IDs instead, according to a GMA News report.

Five out of six commissioners sent written memos to express their opposition towards the bib vests, which they found unnecessary, echoing public sentiments.

The commissioners, according to Rappler, are Rowena Guanzon, Christian Lim, Luie Guia, Arthur Lim, and Sheriff Abas.

Presidential Bets React

A handful presidential candidates took the opportunity to also speak regarding the issue, with Mayor Rodrigo Duterte and Senator Grace Poe criticizing the expenses.

Secretary Mar Roxas, on the other hand, said that this may help teachers because this would give them an additional uniform.

If the bidding contract pushed through, over 353, 053 pieces would be produced, costing over Php75 per piece.

While Comelec cancelled the call for bib vests, it will still procure 6, 158 collared shirts for its employees, costing Php1,231,600.
