The Palarong Pambansa 2016 which showcases the prowess of young Filipino student athletes will open on Apr. 10 in Legazpi City, Albay. Governor Joey Salceda states that Albay is in its final preparations for the event. He ensures that athletes and other participants will be kept safe by tapping the services of 2,000 police officers and volunteers for their response team.
The 59th edition of the national athletic meet will feature 18 regions instead of the usual 17 because Negros Island Province opted to compete as an independent regional team. Over 14,000 athletes from all over the country will slug it out in various sports disciplines in this nine-day event.
The National Capital Region is tabbed as the heavy favorite to win the overall championship. Palarong Pambansa offers 610 gold medals in 21 different sports disciplines. ABS-CBN recently inked in a press conference a formal partnership with the Department of Education (DepEd) and the province of Albay to air highlight events of Palarong Pambansa on ABS-CBN Sports + Action.
A torch relay will commence all over Albay starting Friday and ends in the lighting of the Palaro urn on opening day. President Aquino is expected to attend the opening ceremonies as guest speaker. Opening ceremonies will start at 4 p.m. on Sunday at the Bicol University Sports Complex.
