Quezon City Rep. Bong Suntay faced backlash from fellow lawmakers on Tuesday after making remarks about actress Anne Curtis during a House committee on justice hearing tackling impeachment complaints against Vice President Sara Duterte.

The hearing was focused on the sufficiency in substance of the remaining impeachment complaints. While questioning allegations that Duterte committed acts of political destabilization, sedition, and insurrection, Suntay argued that the accusations were largely based on her presence at events where President Marcos was criticized.

“You know, 'yong statement being the designated survivor, it’s not illegal. It’s not criminal. In fact, it’s a process in the United States, the mere utterance na I’m designating myself — In fact, hindi nga pwede yun eh: Can you designate yourself without a process? Sinabi lang niya 'yon. Siguro apatawa lang siya,” he said.

In attempting to illustrate his point, Suntay referenced seeing Anne Curtis at a mall and imagining scenarios, which he claimed could not be penalized as they were only thoughts.

"And lastly, minsan nasa Shangri-La ako, nakita ko si Anne Curtis. Ang ganda-ganda pala niya. You know, may desire sa loob ko na nag-init talaga, at na-imagine ko na lang kung ano ang pwedeng mangyari. Pero siyempre hanggang imagination lang 'yun."

San Juan Rep. Ysabel Maria Zamora immediately moved to have the remarks stricken from the record.

“Madam Chair, I would like to have those statements stricken off the record,” Zamora said.

Suntay objected.

“There is nothing se*xual in what I said, nothing immoral. It’s just, I said, I imagined something. I think there is nothing wrong,” Suntay replied.

Batangas Rep. Gerville Luistro reminded members to remain mindful of their statements, especially as the country observes National Women’s Month.

Meanwhile, the committee voted 22-10 to set aside the first impeachment complaint, leaving two others under deliberation.

Anne Curtis started her career in the mid-1990s and steadily rose to become one of the most prominent personalities in Philippine entertainment. Over the years, she has headlined blockbuster films, starred in successful teleseryes, and co-hosted the long-running noontime show It’s Showtime. In separate news, Anne Curtis disclosed that her flight bound for Dubai had to be diverted to Milan following reports of airstrikes in the Middle East. While she was already mid-flight, authorities reportedly grounded trips heading to the region as a safety precaution. At the time, her husband Erwan Heussaff and their daughter Dahlia Amélie were in Dubai. Erwan later shared a “wild” update, revealing that he was monitoring news about the strikes while their plane was in UAE airspace.
