Padilla made the comments on Wednesday while opening a hearing of the Senate committee on public information and mass media, which he chairs. The hearing tackled proposed measures including the Children’s Safety in Social Media Act.

During his speech, Padilla said:

“Ang mga bata po ngayon sad to say, wag kayong magagalit sakin — nako, maraming batang magagalit siguro — pero pasensya na kayo… you are weak,” Padilla said.

He further added:

“Noong panahon namin di uso yung salitang ‘depression.’ ‘Di ko nga alam yun e, kung ano yung depression.. ngayon batang maliit sasabihin, ‘I’m depressed.’ Magulo,” he added.

In the comments section of GMA News’ post covering the senator’s statement, Kuya Kim left a brief but pointed response:

“It is not that simple Mr. Senator. It is not that simple.”

Kuya Kim’s perspective carries particular weight following the loss of his daughter, Emman Atienza, last year at the age of 19. Emman had struggled with mental health issues for years, and her passing deeply affected the television host and his family. Since then, Atienza has been vocal about the importance of compassion, awareness, and understanding when it comes to mental health challenges faced by the youth.
