With ample support from the locals and a good shooting night, the Barangay Ginebra San Miguel Gin Kings dealt its sister team, the San Miguel Beermen, their worst loss of the season to the tune of 110-84. The win earned them a ticket to the quarterfinals of the 2016 PBA Commissioner’s Cup. The Gin Kings improved their record to 6-4, after scoring a blowout against the Beermen on Sunday, April 3 at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum.
The Gin Kings shot 48% from the clip, but the Beermen only had a 37% shooting percentage, a far cry from their performance against the Star Hotshots on Easter where they shot the light outs from rainbow country.
The first quarter was a tight affair at 16-14 in favor of the Gin Kings, but they quickly pulled away in the second period with the duo of Japeth Aguilar and Chris Ellis combining for 21 points to erect a 52-36 advantage at the half. The crowd favorites never looked back and led by as much as 30 in the final period. Ellis was hailed as the best player of the game, complementing his four other teammates and import who scored in double figures.
Import Othyus Jeffers of the Gin Kings top scored for his squad with 22 points and 16 rebounds, while his counterpart Tyler Wilkerson pitched in 20 points and 16 rebounds. However, Wilkerson was not as effective as he used to be for the Beermen because he was saddled with foul troubles early in the game. Reigning MVP and prized big man June Mar Fajardo contributed 14 points and 10 rebounds for his squad, but he was clearly not 100% as he had just returned from a two-game absence due to a knee injury.
With the loss, the Beermen dropped to 5-3, but they are assured of a playoff spot if they win one game out of their last three assignments for the elimination rounds.
